City of Wilkes-Barre Recycling

Residential Recycling Information

The City of Wilkes-Barre operates a curbside recycling program for residents within the City limits.  Recycling various items reduces the amount of waste going into landfills, decreases disposal costs, saves natural resources and lessens pollution risks.  Listed below are the 4 required items to be recycled in order to comply with the City of Wilkes-Barre’s recycling regulations and the DEP’s Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act of 1988 (ACT 101).  However, the City also encourages everyone to recycle the items that are listed under the Co-mingled Recycling section.

Yard Waste
Over ten years ago, the City of Wilkes-Barre initiated a pilot curbside collection program for woody yard waste, and recycling opportunities for this material have increased ever since. The initiative really took off as municipal curbside programs were implemented, making it easy for residents to recycle not only leaves and garden residue, but also shrubbery and tree trimmings.
Wilkes-Barre residents are realizing the benefits of recycling their leaves and yard waste; not only are these materials taken out of the waste stream, but they are recycled into beneficial products such as compost or mulch that can return nutrients to the soil or be used in residential landscaping projects.

Yard waste includes the following, which should be placed curbside in any open top container or bundled:

Leaf Waste Grass Clippings Garden Waste Woody Waste
Leaf Waste (collected during special pick-ups each fall) Grass Clippings Garden Waste Woody Waste
Sod Garden Waste
Sod Garden Residue

Christmas Trees
Christmas trees are collected each winter. All items, including ornaments, disposal bags, tinsel and lights must be removed prior to pick-up.
Recycling Drop Off Site
In an effort to increase and promote more recycling in the City of Wilkes-Barre, recycling drop off dumpsters are located at the City’s Department of Public Works building 3 Conyngham Avenue Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711.  The drop off hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00AM to 3:30PM.  Also, City residents are urged to pay close attention to newspaper press releases regarding recycling since the City will occasionally open the drop off location for weekend use.  The only materials that may be recycled in these dumpsters are those single stream recycling items on our "Do's and Dont's page"
